TSW Decks

Yapping Freak here to tell you about Decks in the TSW. Decks are simply the set of 7 active skills and 7 passive skills you have set up. This is were you start to get an idea of synergy between weapons and so on. To give you a better idea or if you would rather just enjoy the game and not worry about creating you personal Deck, TSW has provided already made Decks to help its players. Once you finish unlocking all the skills of one of the ready made Decks you receive an exp bonus and an outfit for finishing that deck. Their are some pretty cool outfits to gain this way and the decks themselves do play well if not completely nasty like well done custom decks. For information on putting together decks I highly recommend the TSW forums http://forums.thesecretworld.com/forumdisplay.php?f=12 this has helped me a lot along the way. Whether its tank, dps, heal, or something in between you'll find some good advice on how to build it here.

Lastly I'll also leave you with the Wiki for TSW as it is a great source of info about this game.

New to MMORPG's?

Hello every one,

I'm here to address the people who may not know much about the MMORPG gaming concept. First of all MMORPG stands for "massively multiplayer online role playing game".  Hundreds of thousands if not millions of players all playing the same game with each other. The communities very wildly depending on the fanbase of the game and the support of the company that puts out the MMO in the first place.

Why do people play these? I'll try my best to answer the question as completely as possible. I personally play MMO's because of the effort put into these games is usually (not always) impressive. We're talking huge digital worlds that take weeks if not months to complete what they currently offer. This of course is extended with games that have been out for awhile and have many updates or added content. There are many things to discover about the game, its content, your abilities and the story. I also usually start playing these games with a friend so I almost always have some one to enjoy (or gripe about) the game with. These games are meant to be social. You can talk to others just by typing if your not part of a larger social group like a guild that usually uses some form of voice chat. Once you start playing you instantly become part of a community that has banded together (not counting Player versus Player fights which I'll get into later and will be referred to as PVP) to beat whatever problems they come across.

Help is just a typed question away.

OK now I'll talk about 2 types of content PVE (player versus Enemy) and PVP (scroll up). PvE is what most MMO's concentrate on. This is the main story, mission or any additional content that doesn't require you to fight another player. Of course that means PvP is the same thing except you do fight other players. Some people love pitting themselves against their fellow players, while others hate the idea and much prefer to cooperate with other to achieve goals. Either way most MMO's will have both regardless if they concentrate on one or they other.

Ok now I'm going to go over some terms I have not hit upon yet. "Tank" refers to the person in the group or party that keeps the attention of the monsters you encounter so that they dont kill others. Tanks usually have high defense or other protection to ensure they can survive while getting all of that monster love. Next would be the "Healer". This role is probably exactly what you would expect. The healer heals people in the party, usually centered on the tank first.OK that leaves the DPS. DPS stands for damage per second and that is exactly what they do ..... damage. Mdps stands for Melee Damage per Second while RDPS stands for Ranged Damage per Second. These 3 roles together constitute most of what you can come to expect from MMO roles. Their are many variations of these roles to keep things interesting but you'll usually find these three no matter what.

OK that's it for now, next post will be about Decks in TSW.

The Secret World Content

Well I went into the combat system in the last post so I'll be skipping most of that unless asked. Besides its always better for myself at least, to get a taste of the content and not a mouthful to make me the most interested.

Where there are ravens, there may be Revenants.
Lets start with content. This is something that I feel TSW has done a fantastic job with. Cut scenes are frequent enough and extremely well done but of course you can skip them if desired. The mission you'll encounter will range from the typical *fight x amount of badies* or *get x item and bring it to me because my legs are obviously broken/ I'm a coward* to the very fun investigation or sabotage missions. These last 2 are where the game shines, at least in the beginning. Investigation missions have you digging up info on whatever cult or supernatural activity is happening in the area. This can range from find the secret information hidden in a secret location by a secret organization, to piece together what happened to a prominent cultist 70 years ago when he disappeared. These are engrossing missions that will allow you to go about it with no extra clues like a giant red marker or arrow pointing the way. They are done intelligently so they dont feel like spoon fed intrigue. There is also networks set up to help in social media much like you would expect in conspiracy theory media. The sabotage mission are a sneak in, brake something or find info mission. The first one was fun, but easy, trust me when I tell you this changes fast. All of these missions can be done again for more experience, money and rewards in 24 hours usually.

The voice acting for cut scenes, npc's and for certain monsters is a masterful touch also. Feeling much like you would expect a good Lovecraftian conversation to go. Personality really shines through on the characters thanks to the voice acting.

Wanna live out an Indy fantasy? They got you covered.
The dungeon raiding can begin very quickly as there is the first one in the starting area to cut your teeth on. These are larger scale instances you will need a party of 5 for (usually with the 3dps, healer, tank grouping). Nice story, voice acting, and twists for the story as you come to expect from this game at this point and they do not disappoint. The good gear whether weapons or talismans (armor) is found in these areas. Boss strategies quickly become very important. Most require a certain way to go about it and they are rarely a tank and spank.

The main storyline was extremely well done and became obvious that the writers put alot of heart into it. Spoiler ---- The Syren Song moment had me hooked on this game.

Major content updates come in the form of Issues which there are currently 6 of. The initial download of the game usually gets you 1-4 as I understand it. So here is a teaser for Issue #7 which will be dropping sometime this month.

The Secret World Review

I am currently playing TSW otherwise known as The Secret World, an MMORPG by Funcom. This is a pay once and play forever game. What this means is that you pay for the initial download and that’s it. This game has a subscription option with benefits and an online shop to buy anything additional you might want. This is a horror/thriller type MMO. I personally haven’t played many of these (one or two at most) but that hasn’t taken away from my impression of it so far. The graphics are a lot better than expected, using the same engine as Conan Unchained, this is one of the best looking MMO’s on the market. I’ve played SWTOR and FF14 a realm reborn (reviews to come later), and the only one that comes close is currently FF14. The lighting during the dawn and twilight hours is especially awe inspiring and my hat goes off to the graphics guys who put that much into this game.

Character design and creation could use some real body modifications, at least more than a height slider, but overall is complex enough to have people looking unique even if it takes some time to make your characters face look anywhere near where you want it to. When you do think you have it however, don’t be too surprised if you are not quite sure when you actually start the game. I had to re-create one character 3 times just to get the face to look right once I started the game. You will have lots of clothing options at creation however, which I approve of. Being able to change your look in an MMO these days is essential for long lasting characters and a great way to get money for the company by having outfits and pieces to buy on the online store. Don’t worry that you will have to spend real money to change looks however for there are a lot of options in-game to by with the games currency. You will also have the ability to change everything else that you did during creation. I will cost in game currency, but it can be done.

Next is one of the important things for most MMO’s, the combat system. First off you’ll have a hotbar with 7 open spots until you get your auxiliary weapon which should give you an 8th slot only for that weapon. This doesn’t normally sound like you’ll be doing much but hitting 1-2 buttons to kill everything I can tell you from experience however that I have needed those 7 slots to handle the different combat situations I've found myself in. Between raiding, PVP, and PVE you'll even find yourself using the gear and skill storage tabs a lot to be ready for the different roles and situations you'll be in. You will be able to equip 2 weapons which means you'll have skills from those 2 weapon groups to choose from. Using both gives you wiggle room to customize and find the synergy between weapons and their skill sets. You will also find that the weapon skills themselves are usually flashy enough to be fun to watch, but not so over the top as to be unfitting to the theme of the game itself.

As for combat roles, I find that there are 4 although I feel they could use 5. Three of these are what you would come to expect for any MMORPG, the tank, the healer, and the damage dealer. These are what you would enter PVP or sign up for a raid as. There is also a survivor/solo class that is popular although I have yet to have trouble finding some one for help when I need it. The survivor class is not referred to in the game and you wont find it in the premade decks (decks will be explained later) either. Lastly, what I think TSW could really use, is a more defined support class, a buff and debuffer. You can incorporate these concepts into just about any job and most skills use them in one way or another but someone who really makes the other party members shine is not usually asked for or made. have the ability to change everything else that you did during c

This is where I will stop for now but there will be more to come. Overall this game rocks, especially to those who like the idea of the secret society, supernatural cult setting. Also this is by far the best horror genre MMO I have ever played. It, as all games, has its flaws, but I highly recommend The Secret World to one and all.

I will leave you with this, given to us by Funcom.

Game Reviews!

Yapping Freak here and this is going to be my Vidya Games Blog. I have been playing video games since the original Pong was out and have seen the industry through changes, some good, some obviously bad. I will be both ranting and praising video games that have gotten my attention and if someone has a suggestion of something they’d like to see reviewed let me know. I will get to it at some point if I have already played it. If I haven’t played it yet then I’ll post here how much it will cost and my readers can help with the cost. My aim with this blog will be to eventually get to the point of expanding to media in general.
I have no problem with people responding with your own opinions just keep it civil if you will. As of right now I am not getting a check from any game company so there will be no kissing of booty to those that sign my checks. If I ever do have that then you will have a list of sponsors on here somewhere so that you can see for yourself if that might be happening.
